Braces

Creating Orthodontic Care
for All Ages

At Smiles for Life led by Jeff Lipshatz, we provide specialist orthodontic care for children, teens, and adults. With over 25 years of experience, Dr Jeff Lipshatz and his team have supported many patients through orthodontic treatment across a range of needs.

Braces remain a well-established option for correcting tooth position and bite alignment. Today’s brace systems are designed to be smaller, more comfortable, and less noticeable than in the past.

Types of Braces We Offer

We provide differemt types of braces to suit every lifestyle and smile goal

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces remain a trusted and highly effective orthodontic option, offering reliable results for patients of all ages.

Ceramic (Clear) Braces

For patients who prefer a more discreet option, ceramic braces use clear or tooth-coloured brackets that blend in with your teeth, providing excellent results with a subtle appearance.

What Can Braces Help With?

Braces can correct a wide range of orthodontic concerns, including:
  • Crooked or crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite, underbite, or crossbite
  • Open bite or deep bite
  • Jaw misalignment
  • Difficulty biting or chewing properly
Whether you’re a teenager starting treatment for the first time or an adult looking to perfect your smile, Dr Lipshatz will create a personalised treatment plan to suit your needs and goals.

Braces are on, now what?

When Should Children See an Orthodontist?

While most children begin braces between 11 and 13 years old, we recommend an initial assessment around age 8–9.

Early evaluation allows us to identify developing issues and provide early intervention if necessary, helping prevent more complex treatment later.

How Long Does Braces Treatment Take?

The average treatment time with braces is around 18–24 months, depending on the complexity of your case and the type of braces used.

Every patient is different, but the result is always the same, a healthy, confident, long - lasting smile.

What to expect after your braces are put on?

You will probably not feel too much for the first few hours after the braces have been placed. If you do experience discomfort, it will probably be during the first evening. Feelings of tension in the teeth may last anywhere from a day up to a week.

As with most things, patients experience a range of reactions . Some people go home and are fine to eat normal foods, while others prefer to eat softer foods like pasta and soup for several days.
If your teeth are feeling especially tender you can take pain relief such as Panadol or Neurofen. Chewing sugarless gum can often relieve some of the soreness.
If you feel that anything you are experiencing may not be normal or have any questions, please feel free to call us.

A Team Approach to Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is a shared process. Dr Lipshatz and our team work closely with you throughout your care, with everyone playing an important role.

Between appointments, we rely on you to help maintain your oral health by brushing thoroughly and following the recommended care instructions for your appliances.

Know your braces

  • Coloured Modules

These are small plastic rings that hold the arch wire in place.

  • Wire

The arch wire is attached to the teeth via slots in the metal brackets and is held in place with a metal gate that is closed over the wire, or with small plastic rings called modules.

  • Metal Bracket

Metal brackets are glued onto the teeth. They have a slot through the middle in which the arch wire sits.

  • Hooks

Are used to attach elastics to.

  • Tube

This holds the arch wire in place around the very back teeth.
