Wearing Retainers Smiles for Life

Jeff and the team have worked hard, and we are confident that you are thrilled with your straight teeth and beautiful smile. Now that your braces are off, you may think treatment is complete, but this is only the end of the active stage. You have now entered the retention stage, also known as the maintenance stage.

While we won’t see you as often during this period, it is just as important, and your cooperation is key. At the appointment when your braces are removed, we will fit you with two types of retainers:

  1. Fixed wires behind your upper and lower front teeth. These are more permanent.

  2. A Removable clear plastic retainer for your upper arch.

For the first three years, the removable retainer must be worn every night. After this period, it should still be worn at night, but gradually less. Please follow Jeff’s instructions. Both fixed and removable retainers are essential; they keep your teeth in position and prevent relapse.

If retainers aren’t worn correctly, or if fixed wires become broken, teeth can gradually shift back toward their original position. This can undo much of the hard work you’ve invested. By consistently wearing your retainers as instructed, you can enjoy your gorgeous, brace-free smile for life!
